We all know the importance of the Slip, Slop, Slap rule during our summers spent outdoors in the sun. But did you know: 80% of skin ageing is caused by everyday sun exposure that occurs throughout the year not just at the beach.
Long-term UV exposure can lead to wrinkles, pigmentation, reduced skin elasticity and a degradation of skin texture, including yellowing.
Recent studies have calculated the effect of sunlight alone without any other variables (such as smoking, stress and biological ageing) and determined that women with 80% sun damage look their age, while with 82% damage look three years older, and those with 78% damage appear three years younger1.
These stats definitely emphasise the need to slop on sunscreen every day, all year round to minimise extrinsic ageing caused by the sun.
A Queensland Institute of Medical Research study has revealed that daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreen slows down the ageing process of skin, as well as preventing skin cancer. The world-first study of 900 young and middle-aged men and women showed that after four and half years, those who applied sunscreen most days had no detectable ageing of the skin.
For those beauties out there who are looking for an inexpensive and effective anti-ageing product, then look no further. Sunscreen is proven to keep you looking youthful for longer. Fact. It’s the most important and non-negotiable part of your skincare routine.
