A guide to skincare in your 30s.

By the time we reach our thirties, our skin has been exposed to a significant amount of external stresses. As a result, the first signs of ageing such as fine lines, uneven texture and hyperpigmentation can begin to appear. Another thing you may notice is that compared to your twenties, your complexion may appear a little dull. This is because the rate of skin turnover decreases as we age, causing a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface and contributing to a lacklustre appearance.

So how do we tackle these challenges? Consistency is key when it comes to any skincare regime and particularly so as we transition into the thirties and beyond where a few simple tweaks to existing routines and keeping things consistent can make all the difference

Exfoliate

Incorporating an exfoliating acid (an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA)) into your skincare regime in your thirties can help to speed up the rate of skin turnover and address visible concerns such as dehydration, dull or uneven skin and a lack of elasticity. Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment, containing 5% Glycolic Acid and utilising a unique low pH to ensure maximum efficacy, is ideal to incorporate into your regime three alternate evenings a week. If you want to level up and combine AHAs with Vitamin A – go for Midnight Reboot Serum with Glycolic Acid and Granactive Retinoid. If you find you have a predominantly oily skin and/or suffer from blemishes and breakouts we recommend Clear Skin Tonic with oil soluble exfoliating Salicylic Acid (BHA).

SPF

Getting older is inevitable however premature ageing of the skin in our thirties from exposure to UV is not. Daily application (and re-application!) of SPF is a must to prevent and minimise the signs of extrinsic ageing and uneven skin tone. If you have been applying SPF religiously through your twenties – well done! If not, it is never too late to start. We recommend Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+ be applied daily and reapplied regularly , especially if you are outdoors or exercising.

Hydrate

As we move through our thirties the skins natural moisturising factors start to decline. The production of hyaluronic acid, a natural water binding ingredient in the skin, decreases and the skin begins to lose the ability to hold onto moisture as efficiently.

Ensuring that you apply moisturiser daily to prevent moisture leaving the skin is essential. We recommend the creamy Essential Hydration Cream or a face oil like Golden Haze Face Oil (or both!) depending on textural preferences. In addition to a moisturiser, applying a topical hydrator such as Hyaluronic 8 Super Serum to the skin before the application of a moisturiser can really boost hydration and help to improve the appearance of the skin by visibly plumping and smoothing the skins surface. This lightweight multitasking serum also contains anti-pollution and blue light filters to help protect the skin from environmental stress.

Incorporate antioxidants

Just as healthy lifestyle habits include not smoking (which depletes the body of antioxidants) and taking oral vitamins (to increase the body’s defence systems), if you haven’t already, the thirties are a good time to incorporate topical antioxidants into your daily skincare regime.

Topical Vitamin C for example, can help to protect the skin and counteract damage to skin supporting proteins like collagen that can occur through exposure to UV rays, whilst simultaneously helping to brighten the appearance of dull or hyperpigmented skin. We recommend Vitamin C Serum which may be applied each morning prior to your daily moisturiser / SPF.

Vitamin A is another potent topical antioxidant that can also help to minimise the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture by stimulating cell turnover and bosting the production of collagen. We recommend Vitamin A Serum with 0.5% Retinol, a form of topical vitamin A, 2-3 times a week gradually increasing to alternate nights.

Boost

During the thirties a decrease in the production of collagen can mean fine lines become more prevalent, forming wrinkles, and pores may appear larger – your skin’s texture can even change.
