An expert shares 7 reasons to try skincare, for your body.

We invest time, energy (and money!) into skincare for our faces, but when was the last time you really cared about your body skin?

Body skincare is only becoming more popular, following the ‘skinification’ of hair and scalp care.

Don’t just take our word for it; Google searches for ‘body skin care’ have increased by 1,025% since December 2023.

But what makes body skincare more than just another product you “need” and another step in your routine?

Read on for 7 reasons to try body skincare, according to our resident Dermal Therapist of 35+ years LeeAnne Leslie.

1. Dryness & Dehydration

Body skin is prone to both dryness (a lack of oil) and dehydration (a lack of water).

“This is because body skin has less oil-producing glands than the skin on your face and is more exposed to the elements,” LeeAnne says.

Signs of dry and dehydrated body skin include itchiness, flaking, dullness, fine lines and discolouration.

2. Ageing

How many times have you left the house wearing a V-neck top without applying sunscreen? Or driven with your hands in full view of the sun? (No judgement, it happens!)

Exposed to the elements and often forgotten, body skin almost always shows signs of ageing first, long before they appear on facial skin.

This can look like lines and wrinkles, sun damage, sagging, redness and uneven tone and texture.

3. Body Skin Concerns

We use targeted ingredients to manage skin concerns on the face, so why not the body, too?

Some of the most common body skin concerns like Keratosis Pilaris (or chicken skin), wrinkling of the neck, ingrown hairs and sun damage on the décolletage can be addressed with high-performance body care formulated with active ingredients.

Think: Glycolic Acid, Retinol, Niacinamide, Vitamin C and more.

4. Skin Cell Turnover Rate

Body skin turns over dead skin cells slower than your face does, resulting in dryer, thicker and scalier skin.

“As it takes longer to replace existing skin cells with new ones, dead cells can linger for longer on your skin, making it appear dry, dull and even flaky.”

5. Sensitivity

Thanks to dryness, sun damage and even hormonal changes, the thin skin on your neck can be more sensitive than facial skin.

Using body care formulated with this in mind means your body skin can still benefit from active ingredients with minimal irritation.

6. Texture

While you can absolutely use face skincare on your body, you’d need a lot more product to cover your neck, décolletage and beyond.

A good body skincare product will have been formulated with slip and spreadability in mind so you won’t need several pipettes to treat your body skin’s larger surface area.

7. Price

Body skincare is often (but not always) more affordably priced seeing as there’s more skin to cover.

And using your $100+ serum on your neck, décolletage, arms and even lower body becomes a very expensive exercise.
