Skincare For Pigmented Skin

Pigmentation the result of overproduction of melanin which stains our skin, causing an uneven complexion and darker areas on the face, neck and décolletage. This can result in sun spots, freckles, mottled pigment and patchy areas. Pigmentation is a condition that causes the skin to appear lighter or darker than normal.

If you have brown patches, you have what’s known as hyper-pigmentation. Excessive skin pigmentation is a result of abnormal production and deposition of melanin. Excessive skin pigmentation can arise from a number of causes including UV exposure, hormones, skin trauma, and congenital (existing from birth).

The most common forms of pigmentation are due to sun exposure. Solar lentigos, colloquially known as ‘sun spots’ are an example of this.

Post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation is due to trauma to the skin, resulting in inflammation and pigmentation. Causes can include acne, laser, laser hair removal, IPL, chemical peels, and physical trauma.

Melasma or chloasma is a form of pigmentation that is stimulated by oestrogen (either from pregnancy, the pill, or normal circulating oestrogens).

Sun protection is an absolutely non-negotiable in the fight against pigmentation!
